ZebraPass Closes $5 Million in Series "A" Venture Financing Led by Nokia Venture Partners
Washington, DC - August 10, 2000 - Today marks the launch of ZebraPass, Inc., a wireless ticketing and mobile commerce system designed for movie theaters, other entertainment venues, sports teams, and online ticketing portals. The ZebraPass system provides, not just added efficiency for both venues and consumers, but also one-to-one marketing and consumer loyalty programs. Currently powered by smart cards, the ZebraPass system has been created for a seamless transition to Bluetooth-enabled wireless devices such as cell phones, PDAs and other consumer appliances. The ZebraPass system premiered June 2000 at the New Malibu Theater in Malibu, California.
ZebraPass also announced today a $5 million series "A" venture financing round led by Nokia Venture Partners, the $150 million venture capital fund which invests in high-growth information technology companies with a focus on wireless Internet services, applications, and enabling technologies. With this investment, Nokia Venture Partners receives two seats on the ZebraPass Board of Directors, which will be filled by Tom Kenney and John Gardner.
"We are very excited about ZebraPass and the opportunity that they are pursuing. The ZebraPass technology platform enables the sports and entertainment industries to communicate and transact with their customer base like never before," said Tom Kenney, Principal, Nokia Venture Partners. "The ability to purchase tickets and other concessions or merchandise, pay for parking in advance, receive information, and communicate with venues anytime, anywhere, and from any device, represents the type of applications and services that will become prevalent in the future Mobile Information Society."
ZebraPass was co-founded by Jordan Klear and Marc Steren, both entrepreneurs with a vision for putting wireless technology to use in the entertainment and sports industries. With a need for extensive management experience in information technology, ZebraPass hired Dan Cunningham as the company's CEO. Dan brings ZebraPass more than 30 years of experience in managing the operations and growth of smart card and information technology companies. Dan was formerly the CEO of Gemplus Card International Corp., the North American Subsidiary of Gemplus, the world's largest supplier of smart cards.
"ZebraPass takes the buzz about wireless application to the next level by integrating wireless ticketing systems into entertainment and sports venues worldwide, using the Internet to benefit both venue owners and consumers," said Dan Cunningham, Chief Executive Officer, ZebraPass. "ZebraPass is becoming the primary technology for developing one-to-one relationships between sports teams and their fans, entertainment venues and their patrons. It is exciting to be able to apply my management experience and technical knowledge to the growth of ZebraPass."
To date, ZebraPass has raised a total of $6.5 million. The company's elite group of investors and advisors includes:
Jerry Breslauer of Breslauer and Rutman, LLC, a business management firm that specializes in the financial affairs of individuals in the entertainment industry, and former member of the Board of Directors at City Search.
Harris Barton, former San Francisco 49er and co-founder of Champion Ventures, the venture capital investment firm designed for individuals involved in professional sports.
David Falk of SFX Sports Group, the world's largest diversified promoter, producer, and venue operator for live entertainment events, as well as the agent for numerous athletes.
David Holtzman, Chairman and CEO of Opion, and former Senior Vice President and CTO of Network Solutions, the world's leading registrar of Web addresses.
Curtis Polk of SFX Sports Group, the world's largest diversified promoter, producer, and venue operator for live entertainment events, as well as the agent for numerous athletes.
Scott Wallace, President and CEO of Wallace Theaters, one of the nation's largest movie exhibitors.
Casey Wasserman, owner of the Arena Football League team Los Angeles Avengers.
The ZebraPass system transfers ticket information and consumer data using the highest level of SSL encryption to maintain consumer security. The consumer logs on to the venue website to purchase tickets, then proceeds directly to the event, avoiding long lines at the box office, the ticket kiosk and concession stands. As technology moves forward, consumers can perform transactions using any Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) device, then enter the event with their Bluetooth-enabled phone, PDA, or chosen wireless device acting as the ticket.
Other consumer benefits from ZebraPass include easy ticket refunds/exchanges for season ticket holders and loyalty rewards for concession/merchandise purchases. Venues such as movie theaters, sports arenas, and theme parks can expect an increase in season ticket holders and a better understanding of their customers.
